The Gol Iluminado

In 2006 Chilean football legand Elias Figueroa and his long term friend and former football team mate Steve Leighton under took a new challenge. To create a charity foundation which gives back the love that football fans and corporations have for the beautiful game. With their enthusiasm and unconditional support from their families they created the Gol Iluminado Foundation. The main focus, is to create. - Sports, Peace, Cultural and Social development programs for underprivilidged people of the world. 

The Foundation is named after the most important event of Elias's career as a professional footballer, when he scored the “gol iluminado”. Elias’s famous goal was christened as the gol iluminado because a ray of light shown through the stadium, Illuminating an area in the penalty box at the very same point where Elias headed the ball into the roof of the net. The game finished 1-0 against Cruzeiro at the Beira-Ri stadium. The thrilling victory crowned International as champions in Brazil for the very first time in their history.
